Palace of Versailles

Now a wealthy suburb of Paris, Versailles was once a country village where Louis XIII went on hunting trips. After purchasing the property in 1624 and building a hunting lodge, it was his successor, Louix XIV who  expanded it into one of the largest palaces in the world.

While visiting in December does not provide the full impact of the beauty of the gardens in bloom, the trade off was easy access to view all of the open areas and grounds with almost no congestion or line-ups.

Even though I was lucky enough to be there on a brisk sunny mid-December day, I will return another time in spring or fall to see the Palace of Versailles in colorful bloom and the forests with foliage. More Paris posts
