It’s one thing to be a tourist, on the outside looking in, it’s quite another to have the type of experience we had with Hedvig who graciously spent the afternoon and evening showing us the mountain community of Castelbuono and their country home. Hedvig’s husband, Tonino, grew up in the charming community of Castelbuono, high in the mountains about 1.5 hours by train from Palermo.

We arrived by bus from Cefalu and Hedvig met us at the local bar where we enjoyed a beer in the cool mountain air. Arriving in the early afternoon was interesting because most of the shops were closed and the streets quiet and empty.

We strolled around taking pictures and had the pleasure of sampling the amazing panettone from Fiasconaro, (Brigitte, a pastry chef by training says it’s the best she’s ever tasted) made right in Castelbuono.

We stopped briefly at Tonino’s family home which had been in the family for generations and where his parents still live, after that Hedvig drove us out into the coutryside to their olive farm. As you can see from the pictures the house and surrounding are simply postcard perfect. Hedvig said that only 1 month ago did they get electricity and water is currently drawn from 1 of 4 wells or brought in plastic jugs from the city. Hedvig has worked her magic to transform the little cottage into a romantic oasis complete with sheer draperies, delightful accents and most of the comforts of home.

Outside Hedvig prepared a barbecue and gathered some sorrel and mustard greens which she sauteed with a little olive oil. Fresh bread, homemade wine, the most delicious homemade orange liqueur and the quiet of the mountains made everything just perfect!
